Once a year, we take part in AV Test’s macOS antivirus testing.
AV Test is an independent IT security research firm, that compares different antivirus/anti-malware products for both Mac and Windows, and provides the results to consumers, for free, on their website.
By taking part in this testing, customers are able to see how ClamXAV compares to other antivirus/anti-malware products on the market, and, since the results are displayed in a concrete number format, it’s easy to see which products scored more highly.
AV Test focuses on three areas: malware detection, false positives, and performance.
The scores for the September 2023 test were released on 12 October 2023, and we’re absolutely delighted with our performance!
ClamXAV scored 100% in Protection, which includes “detection of widespread and prevalent malware discovered in the past 4 months”. This is on par with the industry standard, and gave us 6 out of 6 possible points in the category.
We also did really well in Performance. ClamXAV’s impact on downloading, installing, and copying files matched or was better than industry average. The impact on installing software was particularly impressive, with ClamXAV having an average of a 4% impact, compared to the industry average of 13%. Overall, we scored 6 out of 6 in Performance.
Usability covers false detection of legitimate software as malware, and false warnings given when using and installing software. ClamXAV did not have any of these warnings, which again gave us 6 out of a possible 6 points.
In summary
Full marks in all categories. 100% detection rate of malware. Performance that’s better than industry average. I’d say that’s worth its weight in gold!
