Extra Menus and Today Extension

Services/Contextual Menu

ClamXav comes with a Finder contextual menu item, and a Services Menu item. What these allow you to do is select a file or handful of files in the Finder and scan them directly from there.

Select one or more files in the Finder and right-click to access the contextual menu item. If you are using 10.6, the item name Scan with ClamXav will appear at the bottom of the menu, otherwise it can be found inside the "Services" submenu.

To use the Services Menu Item, select one or more files in the Finder and then go to the Finder menu » Services » Scan with ClamXav, or use the keyboard shortcut Command-Shift-S.

There is no specific action required to install the menu item other than installing and running ClamXav itself. (Users of OS X 10.6 will need to log out and back in again to make the menu items appear)

Today Extension

ClamXav also comes with a Notification Center/Today Extension. What this allows you to do is see the following items at a glance:

  • Date and Time the malware definitions were last updated
  • Date and Time and result of the last scheduled scan
  • The result of the last 5 items scanned by ClamXav Sentry

Should you wish to see more details, click the icon beside each item to open the appropriate log file.

The Today Extension will only work in OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) or newer. To install it, you have to run ClamXav at least once, then go to Notification Center and click "Today" at the top. Then, click the "Edit" button at the bottom and select "ClamXav Latest Info" from the list of available items on the right hand side.
